“Characterization of Porous Materials: Principles, Methods and Evaluation” 

 

One day seminar outlining the principles behind the methods available for porous materials characterization, experimental procedures and data interpretation. This short course is suitable for those working in academic and industrial research of advanced, functional porous materials, and those responsible for analytical services and quality control aspects of materials like catalysts, pharmaceuticals, batteries, ceramics, adsorbents and so on. 

 

1.            Physisorption general introduction (best practices, e.g. sample prep, void volume and equilibration) 

2.            Surface area, why and how (including t-plot and best practices e.g. micropore range) 

3.            Pore size by gas adsorption (micropore, mesopore, DFT vs BJH) 

4.            Pore size by mercury intrusion (applications, best practices, safety)  

5.            Vapor sorption (focus on water) 

6.            High pressure adsorption (greenhouse gas storage, hydrides)
